alaska has made several attempts to build a capitol building, at one point looking at building an entirely new city closer to the population center of the state. juneau is isolated and cannot be reached by automobile but has a spectacular setting. juneau held an invited design competition for a capitol building. the state is still using the territorial capitol. the results of the design competition were met with strong opposition because they were too avante garde. none of the entries took advantage of the spectacular site so mr. olschlager’s academic study proposed a building with a traditional central rotunda of glass with the two legislative chambers flanking the rotunda.
